Betty has the Blues

Betty hasn't been feeling well.

She is suffering from
Potassium Bromide Toxicity again.
The signs started showing around Tuesday and were undeniable by Friday morning.

Her vet has been trying to slowly reduce the amount of PB she takes to a more appropriate level for her size. When we adopted her, she was on 500mg. A dog her size is only supposed to be on appx. 250mg. Before she got sick with PB Toxicity this 2nd time, she was down to 400mg, but it was still too much.

Friday afternoon Dr. Stephens reduced her PB in half. He also considered flushing her system with saline solution, but since she was still able to walk and function normally he decided against it.

Friday night was the first night Betty didn't get her PB pill. I must admit I was so anxious that without it, she would have a seizure. But she did just fine through the night.

Today she is already showing some signs of improvement. But she's still not feeling very well.
Nurse Stella has been by her side making sure she's comfortable while I'm working in the office.

I realize it might be tempting to send a care package, but the fat little ones are still following their diet. No foodables allowed. Unless it's a box of Sees candy for the management...

Hi Shannon! I'm so sorry to hear that Betty isn't feeling good. I know Stella is a good nurse and that Betty is in good hands. I'm sending healing vibes because that's all I can send since Uncle Sam took all my treat money.

Aw man...poor Betty!!!

Does this reduction in meds by chance cause a reduction in her toxic gas? I'm just looking for a bright spot in this!

Give her some snuggles and kisses on her adorable smushed face from us.

Love,
S-Dog and Laura

Poor Betty :( Hope she feels better soon! I am sure Stella is being a good nurse.

I caught Yoda & Brutus trying to sneak into the food cupboard and they already had a box half full of treats to send - luckily I caught them in time :)

Oh, I'm so very sorry to learn about this. I never even heard Potassium Bromide Toxicity before but it sounds bad. I'm so glad that she's improving. If Stella would like to borrow my nurse's cap I'd be happy to share.

Aw that sucks! You've probably already tried this (or are currently doing it) but if not, has your vet tried using potassium bromide and phenobarbital at the same time?

Thanks everyone! Betty is feeling a little better. Not 100% but she's definitely on her way.

Heya Ike! Betty is currently on potassium bromide and phenobarbital. She's also on Keppra so we can get her off the Potassium bromide altogether since she has a sensitivity to it. The vet thinks she's just been given too much and it turns toxic to her system.

Frenchie kisses to all! (Don't worry, Betty hasn't recycled any poop today...)

Oh, poor Betty! On the other hand, not only does she have nurse Stella's care, I am certain she couldn't have better care overall. I hope she gets well again, soon and please let Gunther know if he's needed. His sister is far more important than any date night.
